When Japan opened to foreign trade during the Meiji period, Japanese artists coined the term nihonga to differentiate between artworks painted using traditional Japanese materials and other styles of painting. During my time in Japan I was able to learn about mineral pigments and how to mix and paint with them from Maria Tanikawa.
